3D Class Week 16 - Creating an Environment Part 2

This week we continued working on our environment by starting to actually build it.  We used the terrain tool to sculpt the environment and then created a rock set to put into the environment.

I decided to scrap my initial hand painted forest environment because getting the textures to look correct using Zbrush and substance was proving to be too difficult for my current level.  I was still able to use my textures but decided to scope down to a magical rock quarry/mine.

Glowing rock blueprint with parameters for me to change color/glow intensity

The chaotic mess of a blueprint for the floating rocks.  They continuously feed into one another but still play/animate at different intervals:

And here is the rock set (the one with the runes looks ugly cuz theres no emissive glow on it RIP):

It's coming along slowly.  I'm hoping I'll like it more once I add in 2 trees I'm making and the torches/do all that fancy post process stuff.  I think it'll turn out cool???? At least that's the goal haha

2D Class Week 15 - Lighting Part 2

This week we revisited our lighting assignment.  Unfortunately, due to a combination of being sick, capstone being selected and the holidays coming up, I didn't have as much time as I wanted to work on this assignment.  I decided to do a painting/study thing of David Bowie from the Aladdin Sane era but went for a more messy/quick approach along with going for a more illustration style I guess???

3D Class Week 15 - Creating an Environment Part 1

This week we used Zbrush to sculpt and make tileable textures.  I made 2 textures using that method, 1 texture using Substance Designer and 1 texture hand painted in Photoshop to try out all the different methods.  Using Zbrush/Substance were my favs just because making a handpainted texture tileable in photoshop is an actual nightmare.

All 4 textures together

The dirt and rocks were sculpted in Zbrush and colored in Substance Painter

This grass texture was made in Designer.  I followed along with this tutorial so all credit is given to him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VJdJSbqMgQ

And this texture I painted by hand in Photoshop

2D Class Week 14 - Perspective Round 2

This week we revisited the perspective assignment from a million years ago.  I decided to take this as an opportunity to sketch out my concept for my environment that I want to be building over the next couple of weeks for the 3D assignment.

This was from round 1:

3D Class Week 14 - Modeling a Medium Complexity Character Part 3

For this week we took our model that we've been working on and had to bake the details, texture it ad then finally put it in engine.  I wanted to go for a more hand painted look when texturing since I want to do a hand painted environment for the next assignment and thought this would be good practice!
To do this I used 3D Coat and immediately fell in love with the program.

Anyway here is the final textured game res model (3200 tris):

Here it is with the wireframes:

And here were my textures along with the UV's laid on top of them:

And here is the final hi-poly sculpt and him in UE4:

All in all I learned a lot!  This was the second thing I've ever made in Zbrush and I'm really proud of how it came out!  This was also my first real time using 3D Coat and I can't wait to use it for more things.

2D Class Week 13 - Composition Round 2

For this week we revisited the composition assignment from, what feels like, a million years ago.

I decided that for this time I'd do a painting study instead of an original piece.  I found this still from a film called Vanishing Point and thought it was lovely and wanted to do a study off of it.

Heres the original still/reference:

And here's my painting:

I thought that this was a good example of L-Shaped composition and just loved how this shot was framed.

This was my original one from round 1:

3D Class Week 13 - Modeling a Medium Complexity Character Part 2

This week we continued to model our medium complexity character.  This part, however, we focused on making a low poly version of our hi-res sculpt that we will end up baking/texturing.

These were the final low poly renders:

And these are the UV's:

This guy's total poly count was 3200 tris

The link to the hi-res sculpt is right here

2D Class Week 12 - Value

For this week we revisited our value assignment from a million years ago.  I decided this week to do a study based off this still from the film "Night of the Hunter".  This was my reference image:
