2D Class Week 15 - Lighting Part 2

This week we revisited our lighting assignment.  Unfortunately, due to a combination of being sick, capstone being selected and the holidays coming up, I didn't have as much time as I wanted to work on this assignment.  I decided to do a painting/study thing of David Bowie from the Aladdin Sane era but went for a more messy/quick approach along with going for a more illustration style I guess???

2D Class Week 14 - Perspective Round 2

This week we revisited the perspective assignment from a million years ago.  I decided to take this as an opportunity to sketch out my concept for my environment that I want to be building over the next couple of weeks for the 3D assignment.

This was from round 1:

2D Class Week 13 - Composition Round 2

For this week we revisited the composition assignment from, what feels like, a million years ago.

I decided that for this time I'd do a painting study instead of an original piece.  I found this still from a film called Vanishing Point and thought it was lovely and wanted to do a study off of it.

Heres the original still/reference:

And here's my painting:

I thought that this was a good example of L-Shaped composition and just loved how this shot was framed.

This was my original one from round 1:

2D Class Week 12 - Value

For this week we revisited our value assignment from a million years ago.  I decided this week to do a study based off this still from the film "Night of the Hunter".  This was my reference image:

2D Class Week 10 - Silhouettes Part 2

This we revisited the silhouettes assignment from week 2.  I decided to continue exploring shapes and designs for weapons but I wanted to go for a long/greatsword feel with a slightly evil look to them.

These were my designs:

2D Class Week 09 - Basic Shapes and Shape Language Round 2

This week we revisited our basic shapes assignment from week one and either made a new piece or redid our original.  I decided to do a new one.

This was the original one from week 1:

And this is the one I did this week:

And just as a fun exercise I did a study based off of one of Syd Mead's paintings.  I simplified it a lot but wanted to get the essence of the painting.  It was really good practice!

This was Syd's original painting:

2D Week 07 - Final Illustration

For this weeks assignment we took all the concepts that we learned over the past few weeks and had to make a final illustration.  Along with that we took an artist that we looked at and used some elements of their artwork as inspiration in ours.

The artist that I chose was Matt Rhodes.  I was influenced by his linework and how he rendered clothing.  Along with that I was influenced by his way of coloring/shading his characters.  There's a really good video showing his process and I tried to emulate it but I found it hard trying to render a character in the way that he does it.  It's a super cool process and is quick and produces cool results but I just couldn't get it to look right.

So instead, I did a hybrid of his style and mine.  I'm more into graphic illustrations with hard cel shading and less into painterly things but I wanted to try merging the two.  I really like how rough it looks and how it still maintained that graphic feel.  I learned a lot doing this and had a really good time drawing it!

The illustration is a scene from a Dungeons and Dragon's campaign that I'm in where my character Ren (the one in the foreground) is encountered by an old enemy that he has been looking for in a dark and corrupted forest.  The enemy is a Drow soldier who got corrupted by Fey magic and who's appearance got slightly distorted.  This scene illustrates Ren being caught off guard seeing her and on the defensive.

2D Class Week 06 - Lighting

This week we took a look at 3 point lighting and had to get an object and do a painting study based around it.  I'm actually really excited to do this since I've had a hard time painting/seeing light but I think I got a breakthrough on this assignment!

I set up a simple 3 point lighting on one of my figures as reference:

And then I changed it to greyscale and did my study based on that:

And just for the heck of it, I added a color/overlay layer and added some color to make it look like the original (can't believe how good it looks to be honest):

I found out a good method of painting while doing this and now its finally starting to click in terms of not overthinking the blending of colors and over blending.  I basically did soft cel shading and it worked out really well!

2D Class Week 05 - Perspective

For this week we learned about the different types of perspective (1, 2 and 3 point) and how to use them.  I've always been pretty bad at perspective, especially when it came to putting characters into perspective and warping it.  I decided to just do a simple 2 point perspective to get more comfortable with it.

This was my final drawing:

2D Class Week 04 - Composition

For this weeks assignment we looked at different layouts for composition in a frame.

I was at first going to do a spooky forest scene that was influenced by the circular composition example

My super messy sketch:

As I started to render it I realized I wasn't feeling the theme/illustration anymore.  I then scrapped it and decided to do a(nother) forest scene but this time more winter themed.  I used the handy dandy rule of thirds to create my illustration.

I was partly influenced by the backgrounds of Samurai Jack, mostly the texture and slight details in the branches.  I went through different color palettes but ultimately decided on the yellow/blue color palette since it reminded me of a snowy morning.

2D Class Week 03 - Value

For this week we took some existing lineart and chose a lighting direction and painted the values in black and white.

2D Class Week 02 - Silhouettes

For this week we looked at silhouettes and learned what makes an interesting silhouette for a character/weapon/etc.

I wanted to focus on making weapons and went with an orcish theme.

I had a few inspirations when making these concepts including The Butcher and Garrosh Hellscream from Heroes of the Storm

2D Assignment Week 01 - Basic Shapes and Shape Language

For this week we had to go into zbrush and pose some mannequins and paint them in Photoshop as an exercise in light and shape.

The top is the pose and the bottom is the drawing.  I used some of Nick Zuccarello's brushes in conjunction with a few of my own.  The blending/smudge brush is super sweet.
