S3 - Personal Project 1: Plague Doctor Workshop

So after taking a 2 week long chill sesh for summer break I'm back at FIEA ready to work!!!

Legit, don't take your summer break for granted.  Relax and chill or if you do want to work and do a project, do something you'll really enjoy that's low stress.  I came back to school super recharged and ready to work because I did next to nothing during break 10/10 would def recommend

Anyway!!! For this project I'm doing more hand painted stuff!  I enjoyed the Reindeer Blacksmith project so much that I want to do another hand painted environment.  This time though, I want to focus more on individual props and filling a space with those props.

I knew from the start I wanted to do something involving the theme "poison" and that I wanted my colors to be teal blue/bright green with a pop of raspberry red (don't ask how I thought of this, my brain just really wanted to do those things).  I've also been playing some top down RPG's lately (divinity 2) and wanted to do a top down environment thing.

So I decided to get some reference together.  I was really inspired by some of the props in WoW Legion specifically these:

I was also super inspired by this room in Diablo 3:

This was my full reference/mood board:

Once I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do for the environment I did a super quick 2 hr blockout to get the space that was in my head in front of me:

I then took those images and brought them into photoshop and did a quick and dirty draw over with some colors slapped on it.  I wanted to make sure the colors I wanted to use would actually work well together and I think they do!  This also helped me visualize all the stuff I was going to reuse since I want to practice/get better at modular props.  This took me 2.5 hrs

Once I got all that done I made a rough schedule and list of props and goals.  I really recommend doing this especially if you're super scatter brained like me because it helps get all your thoughts out there.  I wanted to list out what I wanted to learn from the project and possible problems and I think that's going to help me organize myself.

It's a super long document so I'm not going to post it here but here's the link if you're interested: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bcR_5rGxeBuUyxvIOzBVcaG0cbd-yzvUYPu02KVrdHY/edit?usp=sharing

S2 - Personal Project Part 3: Rising Reveangence

Ay yoooo I finished up my personal project of the reindeer workshop!!!  Sorry for not posting updates I was dumb busy but check out how sweet this came out

Concept by Kim Goeun

Sorry future fiea students for wondering my process on this.  All I gotta say is get your proportions hella accurate (I literally put a ruler up to my screen to make sure I was getting measurements right) and pay super close attention to how the light and colors shift in the concept art.

3D S2 - Personal Project

We're finally onto doing personal project stuff which is super cool!

For my first thing, I want to try my hand at hand-painted props.  The last thing I did was the Squid character back in semester 1 and I want to get out of PBR for a bit.

I found this super cool concept art by Kim Goeun and decided to work on that

I want to have the LP done by 4/13

The HP done by 4/20

And textures done by 4/27

3D S2 - Environment Final

So I never posted any updates because of GDC ie. Network Hell but...I finished my environment which is the Rockport Limited from the podcast The Adventure Zone!

I wanted to do a train car that Taako, Merle, Magnus and Angus are staying in while they figure out who dun it on the train.  I wanted to include the major items for the 3 main characters (X-Treme Teen Bible, Umbra Staff, and Railsplitter) but I also wanted to include a couple of other small details such as Angus' Caleb Cleveland: Kid Cop novels, various newspaper articles, a suitcase for Magnus and Angus' Grandfather's silverware set (with everything but 3 forks missing!  can you find the rest of the silverware in the car???)

There's more that I want to add to it like a tea set, a new wall texture, a chandeleir/wall light fixtures, a bag for Taako, and the SCUTTLEBUDDY but, it's time for me to move on from this for the time being.  I'm getting sort of burnt out from PBR textures and want to do more hand painted stuff for a bit!

I learned a lot about environments doing this and can feel myself slowly but surely getting past the technical hurdles that have been blocking me!  I'm excited for the next environment I make and I'm excited to revisit this later.

3D Class - Bust Retopo/Paint

Final bust with renders and the stand
The final tri count was 16.8k tris

I'm super proud with how this all came out!
Making a human face bust was sooo challenging but so rewarding!  I learned so much and conquered my fear of Zbrush

3D Class - Organic Bust Sculpt

We are now FINALLY out of hard surface/gun hell god bless.
This week we were tasked to sculpt an organic bust.  For my subject I chose to do the bust of Cousin Maude from The Haunted Mansion at Disney.
I absolutely loved the face of the character and thought that there was enough in the character for it to be a challenge but not enough crazy detail for me to be stressed over.

Reference image:

And here is my final sculpt of the character:

I learned soooo much from doing this assignment and finally feel more comfortable in Zbrush because of it.  I got to use a bunch of different techniques and try out a lot of different ways to make shapes and I'm overall super proud of myself for how it came out!

3D Class Week 05 - Hardsurface Weapon Texture

After 3 weeks of wanting to shoot myself with this laser pistol, its finally done.  I ended up re-uving the whole thing and rebaking it a few times to get something I was satisfied with.  I also ended up learning how to do a lot of cool things in Substance Painter to get the final texture look that I wanted.

Big shout out to Marchand Venter for showing me how to add height to paint in Substance along with showing me how all the weird little filters and stuff work in Painter.  You're the man.

Final renders.  Super inspired by the Nuka Cola ads in Fallout 4 when it comes to the design of these renders.

Final Bake.  Look at those crisp lines

Final Bake with wireframes.  My final tri count was 4100 so 2050 polys.

Additional renders

All in all I'm super happy that everything came together in the end.  This was a really stressful project for me personally but I learned a lot especially how to break down complex shapes.

3D Class Week 04 - Modeling a Hard Surface Weapon - Resurfacing

For this week we took our hi poly gun and retopo'd it.  I also did a test bake with the hi-poly with some quick UV's to see how it would look and if the side panels would bake correctly or if i would need to retopo those as well.  Glad to know that they did even with a quick UV!

Next up is the UV/Bake/Texture which I'm looking forward to!
